THE CURRICULUM OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES IN SPANISH SECONDARY EDUCATION: REFLECTIONS ON THE TEACHING OF SOCIAL SCIENCES TODAY

Abstract

In the social sciences, geography and history as one of the subjects to take obligatorily by secondary school students are generally intended to deepen the knowledge based society of learning that students have acquired in the previous stage. The teaching of this course is that students acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to understand the reality of the world around them, the collective experiences of the past and present as well as the space in which their life in society. However, today many students of ESO claim that Social Sciences are useless, and not without reason. Unlike other subjects, his pragmatism may raise some doubts. Memorizing dates, names, times, rivers, etc. usually has only one purpose: to pass the corresponding exams. And it seems that the current teaching practice, as well as complex, not too innovative models provides future teachers of Social Sciences. For transmissive practice prevails in that communication remains unidirectional-from teacher to student, in which society technologies of communication and information penetrate very slowly, and which probably lasts a conception of the subject closest to the prevailing hundred years ago that it should prevail today.

Licenciado en Geografía e Historia. Máster en Didáctica de la Lengua y la Literatura (realizando actualmente la Tesis Doctoral en el mismo programa). Profesor de Secundaria y Bachillerato en Andalucía y Madrid. España.
