Abstract

ABSTRACT: Introduction: There are difficulties in the didactic treatment to the Electrocardiography content in the curriculum of the Medicine career in Cuba.

Objective: to analyze the historical tendencies of the teaching-learning process of General Medicine in the didactic treatment of electrocardiography content.

Method: a systematic review was carried out by means of a computerized search in biomedical databases, interviews, analysis of systematic evaluations, state exams and study plans of the Medicine career; the subject was investigated in primary sources of information published in Spanish and English in a range of 5 years.

Results: The history of medical education in Cuba, the emergence of Internal Medicine and its evolution as content of the Cuban medical curriculum were briefly discussed. It was deepened in the tendencies of electrocardiography learning at world level, the influence of technical scientific development on it and its gradual inclusion as part of the Internal Medicine and Clinical Propedeutics subject. The experiences of health professionals regarding their experience in the subject were reported, in addition to developing an analysis on the treatment of the content in the study plans and forms of evaluation.

Conclusions: the teaching of clinical skills, in this case knowledge of electrocardiography, cannot be limited to one subject, it should begin and continue throughout the career, that is to say, an adequate vertical and horizontal integration. Despite being a very common diagnostic tool, it is undeniable that there is a lack of learning of this content.
