Abstract

Shoulder pain affects a substantial number of adults, and this pain is mostly due to injuries to the rotator cuff, the muscular assembly formed by the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, minor round and subscapular muscles. The most commonly reported injuries in the literature are tendinopathies affecting subacromial structures, calcifying tendonitis and ruptures or tears. Various work activities and risk factors have been described that contribute to the appearance of lesions in the rotator cuff more frequently, and it is even suggested that there are mutations in various genes that are involved in the appearance of the lesions, as well as a certain genetic predisposition to suffer this affectation with greater probability. This problem in workers can cause work absenteeism and loss of productivity, leading to significant economic and social costs. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, rehabilitation exercises and physical therapy, as well as surgery are treatment options for rotator cuff injuries. Physical therapy is a very effective way to relieve the symptoms caused by these injuries and to restore normal shoulder mobility before resorting to surgical methods as a last resort.
