EXPERIENCES OF FAMILY MEMBERS IN THE ACCOMPANIMENT OF ONCOLOGICAL PATIENTS OF THE INTENSIVE CARE AREA OF THE SOLCA-PORTOVIEJO HOSPITAL

Abstract

This research work aims to show the primary results of the experiences lived by familiar members who monitor the process of the oncological patients in the intensive care area of the SOLCA-Portoviejo hospital in its terminal stage. Through it, we sought to understand in depth the experiences and impressions of what it meant for families to have a family member in a deplorable state of health and what is the importance they give to family support at critical moments. It was an eminently qualitative study with a particular phenomenological focus that was supported by narrative dialogues of relatives of cancer patients. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were used to know in depth the purpose of the investigation; the data collected were analysed from transcripts and subsequently classified and analysed by open coding. The results show experiences of a substantial reality that surrounds the uncertainty of an awkward experience, but that allow to distinguish, in addition to pain, fear and anguish other signs of family unity such as strength, forgiveness and hope.
