Abstract

The objective of this piece of research is to delve into the procedures implemented for conflict resolutions among students of third baccalaureate year at Portoviejo High School. The study was carried out during several visits to the institution studied in order to know the conflicts between students. Information was collected through free or unstructured observation to determine the causes of conflicts. A questionnaire of multiple answers was applied to a sample of 89 students whose objective was to determine the conflicts between them and how the teachers solve them. A questionnaire was applied to 92 parents to determine the level of knowledge of their sons and daughters conflicts within the school. A questionnaire was applied to 46 teachers in the third baccalaureate year in order to determine if they knew the conflicts between their students. The results revealed that the main generating aspect of conflicts, according to the participants` respondents, is the lack of interpersonal communication and also the teachers resolve conflicts through the expulsion of students during class time instead of having a dialogue with them. The teachers stated that the main causes of conflicts are: inadequate family values, few ethical values, little assertive communication and formation of groups of students that sometimes pursue different ideals. 51% of the parents said they do not know that their sons and daughter have conflicts with their classmates. It is concluded that a healthy family life based on values and attention to the adolescent and an appropriate teacher training with pedagogical techniques are decisive for the resolution of conflicts.
