Abstract

The Popular and Solidarity Economy has become an important factor in the dynamics of local and regional development in Ecuador, becoming a key player in the long-term fight against poverty in the country. Its commitment to an endogenous development model and its participation in globalization contribute to its strategic role in the future development of the country. Despite these strengths, the Popular and Solidarity Economy faces several challenges that it must overcome in order to continue to prosper. The objective of the article was to analyze the challenges faced by the social and solidarity economy in Ecuador; therefore, its theoretical foundations, principles and relevant concepts were reviewed. Additionally, the role of the Popular and Solidarity Economy in the country was examined, since the enactment of the Organic Law of the Popular and Solidarity Economy and the Popular and Solidarity Financial Sector, as well as the public policies that have been implemented by the Ecuadorian government.
